Veterans in Santa Clara County can now get free taxi rides to doctors’ offices, school, and other essential appointments.
The transportation program was created through a partnership between the county, the nonprofit Silicon Valley Chapter of the Military Officers Association of America (MOAA-SV) and Yellow Cab of Silicon Valley.
The rides can be arranged in advance for services like medical appointments, job interviews or employment services, school and other educational opportunities and other essential appointments.
Veterans can contact the county’s Office of Veterans Services to schedule a ride at (408) 918-4980.
“Our veterans must have access to the services and resources that they earned through their service to us.” Supervisor Otto Lee
The funding comes in the form of a $5,000 grant from the office of Santa Clara County Supervisor Otto Lee as part of his district’s community microgrant program called URJGENT. Another $5,000 grant from his office is awaiting approval by the Board of Supervisors, Lee said in a statement.
“Our veterans must have access to the services and resources that they earned through their service to us,” said Lee. “Getting a ride should not be a barrier for veterans to visit a doctor, attend class, or engage with their community.”
There are over 38,000 veterans living in the county, according to the U.S. Census Bureau’s 2022 American Community Survey. Of those, nearly 9,000 are above the age of 65.
‘More than just a ride’
MOAA-SVC president Ret. Col. Ray Watts said the rides would be a “game changer” for vets looking for more independence.
“Providing reliable and accessible taxi services for veterans can significantly improve their quality of life and motility,” Watts said.
“Veterans, especially those with disabilities or limited mobility, often face challenges in transportation, making it difficult for them to attend medical appointments, run errands, or participate in social activities, this really helps reduce stress and anxiety too,” he said.
Diana Melegrito, Yellow Cab’s business development director, said the company was proud to be a partner in the program.
“Yellow Cab has always recognized the tremendous sacrifices made by our veterans and we are honored to be a part of this collaboration to support our veterans’ mobility,” Melegrito said. “Our commitment is to provide a service that reflects our gratitude and respect for those who have served our country. This program is more than just a ride; it’s a way for us to give back to the individuals who have given so much for our freedom.”
