President Joe Biden landed Thursday evening at Moffett Field Air Base in Mountain View for a short visit to the Bay Area for campaign fundraisers.
Air Force One touched down at 7:25 p.m. at Moffett, and from there Biden boarded a helicopter to fly into San Francisco, according to the White House.
On Friday, the president will attend two fundraisers at undisclosed locations in the Bay Area before leaving for Seattle later in the day, White House officials said.
California Street is closed between Powell and Taylor streets all day Thursday and Friday, as is Mason Street between Pine and Sacramento streets, according to the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency. The California cable car line will also be replaced by buses both days.
Biden last visited the region in February for a brief trip that also included multiple reelection campaign fundraisers, as well as a meeting with the widow and daughter of Alexei Navalny, the Russian opposition leader who had recently died.
First lady’s Marin County visit
After arriving Thursday afternoon at San Francisco International Airport, First Lady Jill Biden attended a campaign fundraiser in the Marin County suburb of Kentfield.
About 150 gathered at the home of Stephanie and Mark Robinson, according to media pool reports, including five recipients of the Marin County Teacher of the Year honor: Christina Hawkins from Novato Unified, Ben Cleaveland from Tamalpais High School, Tom Martin from Novato Unified, Cindy Evans from the Marin County Office of Education, and Erika Meeker from Ross School.
The First Lady spoke for about 12 minutes and most of her speech was devoid of politics, until the end, when she compared her husband’s temperament with that of his predecessor. Dr. Biden called former President Trump ‘dangerous’ to the country and spoke to what she called his self-serving nature, according to pool reports.
The First Lady is scheduled to leave Friday for Southern California.
