Santa Rosa City Schools Superintendent Anna Trunnell will leave her position at the end of the school year.

Trunnell announced her departure in a message to educators, parents and students on Friday last week.

After serving in the role for four years, Trunnell said she is leaving to spend more time with family who live in Sacramento, where she began her career as a teacher in the Grant Union High School District.

“This deeply personal decision is, indeed, bittersweet for me as I have grown to love this community,” Trunnell said in her letter. “I admire and appreciate the reverence that our families have for public education.”

Trunnell began her tenure as superintendent in July 2021 and led the district’s transition back to in-person learning following the switch to remote learning during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.

She said she was proud of accomplishments such as increasing mental health support and staffing and creating more engagement with families through initiatives like starting a superintendent’s advisory network.

She also helped pass two bonds to improve school facilities, finalized a facilities master plan, and restructured graduation requirements to give more students a chance to graduate.

Trunnell will depart in June and will help the Board of Education in the selection process for her replacement in the meantime.
