The San Francisco Fire Department said they will be honoring the 118th anniversary of the Great Earthquake and Fire of 1906 on Thursday, April 18 in an annual ceremony.

The event will be held at the famed Lotta’s Fountain, where Market, Geary and Kearny streets meet in downtown San Francisco. The fountain emerged as a gathering spot for families and to search for lost loved ones, being one of the few landmarks that survived the earthquake.

Set to start at exactly 5:12 a.m., the same time the earthquake struck in 1906, the commemoration will be followed by a procession, estimated to start at 5:50 a.m.

The succession will head towards “the Little Giant,” the celebrated golden fire hydrant on the corner of 20th and Church streets, that helped put out the fires that ensued after the earthquake. Following with tradition, the hydrant will be repainted with a fresh coat of gold paint.
