Convoys on state Highway 1 in the Big Sur area will be suspended on Thursday and Friday due to rain in the forecast, according to an update from Caltrans.

Convoys for local residents have been running twice daily in the area of Rocky Creek Bridge, in unincorporated Monterey County, where a section of the highway collapsed on Saturday.

The convoys are meant only for residents and essential workers. They are running once in the morning in each direction at 8 a.m., and again in the afternoon at 4 p.m. After Thursday and Friday, the guided trips are scheduled to resume on Saturday morning.

The National Weather Service is forecasting thunderstorms, showers, possible hail, and snow in high elevations in Monterey County later in the week. Between a quarter to half-an-inch of rain is forecast on Thursday and up to a quarter inch more on Friday.

The Weather Service warned of potential water pooling and ponding on roadways and potential landslides in canyons and steep hillsides.

Caltrans crews will be on scene Thursday and Friday to monitor for any change in conditions at the site, which is about 17 miles south of the city of Monterey.

Engineers and work crews are still assessing the slip out and will place 500 feet of concrete barrier in the center of the roadway in coming days to create a barrier for the convoys and protect workers.
