If at first you don’t succeed, reschedule then reschedule again. That is what Caltrans intends to do this weekend when it will try for the third time in less than two months to replace a section of crumbling pavement on Interstate 680 after the work was repeatedly delayed by foul weather.

Starting at 9 p.m. Friday, Caltrans will close southbound I-680 in Pleasanton between I-580 and Koopman Road for paving work that it expects to finish by 4 a.m. Monday.

Caltrans crews will replace a portion of the existing deteriorated roadway with new pavement. The work will enhance motorist safety while eliminating the need for 40 nightly closures to complete the project otherwise, the agency said.

Northbound I-680 will remain open and will not be affected by the closure.

Caltrans is scheduled to close an approximate 5-mile segment of southbound Interstate 680 in Pleasanton between the I-580/I-680 Connector and Koopman Road on Friday, March 15, through Monday morning, March 18, 2024. (Caltrans via Bay City News)

The closure had to be rescheduled twice due to rain, first in January and then again last month.

Caltrans said in a statement that all entrances to the city of Dublin from I-580 and I-680 will be open during this weekend’s closure. The city’s St. Patrick’s Day events will be held as usual on Saturday and Sunday.

In the spirit of the weekend’s festivities, perhaps Irish eyes will smile on the construction project and there will be nothing but blue skies and rainbows, but if not… Caltrans says it will reschedule the road closure again.
