The San Leandro City Council has unanimously appointed Sbeydeh Viveros-Walton as the new councilmember representing District 1, the city said Wednesday.
Viveros-Walton takes the seat of Celina Reynes, who resigned last December citing personal reasons and a newborn daughter.
Viveros-Walton has lived in San Leandro since 2015, when she moved there with her spouse and two young children, the city said.
She has worked with several nonprofits and currently serves as the director of higher education at Public Advocates, a nonprofit law firm that advocates around issues of poverty and racial discrimination.
San Leandro Mayor Juan Gonzalez said Viveros-Walton’s dedication to equity and public service make her a good addition to the body.

Viveros-Walton has a bachelor’s in rhetoric and ethnic studies from UC Berkeley and a master’s in public administration from San Francisco State University.
“I’m humbled, honored, and grateful for the opportunity to serve San Leandrans as their District 1 City Councilwoman,” said Viveros-Walton in a statement released by the city Wednesday. “As this new chapter unfolds, I promise to build upon the work of our community and fellow councilmembers for a San Leandro brimming with opportunity and promise for the future.”
