Rebecca Hermosillo has a strong lead in the race to be the new Sonoma County District 1 supervisor, according to preliminary results from Tuesday’s election.
Hermosillo, the senior district representative for U.S. Rep. Mike Thompson, D-St. Helena, had about 78 percent of the vote in her race against retired fire captain Jonathan Mathieu.
Hermosillo has been endorsed by Thompson, along with all current county supervisors and the Sonoma County Democratic Party.
Early results showed incumbent District 3 Supervisor Chris Coursey leading his race with nearly 73 percent of the vote. Coursey entered office at the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic and his campaign website touted his leadership in the transition of temporary homeless shelters to more permanent housing.
His competitor was Omar Medina, who pledged to focus on issues related to language justice in a district with a large Latinx population.
