Berkeley residents and merchants whose regular trash pickup is Monday will be pushed back a day New Years, city officials announced.
While carts need to be at curbside by 7 a.m., collection may occur later in the day than usual. If collection is more than one day behind schedule, the public can call (510) 981-7270 to report a missed pickup.
For curbside pickup, holiday trees must be cut up and placed in a green compost cart. They must fit with the lid closed. Whole trees won’t be picked up if left on the curb, as they can damage the city’s collection trucks, according to the announcement.
Trees don’t have to be cut up if they’re dropped off at the city’s transfer station at 1201 2nd St.
The public is reminded to remove all lights, decorations, tinsel, plastic bags, and plastic tree stands.
Flocked or “snow-covered” trees are not compostable. They must be cut up and placed in a gray refuse cart.
The transfer station will take compostable trees for free through the end of January. Starting Feb. 1, the cost returns to the regular fee of $30.75, for disposal of up to 330 pounds of plant debris and organic matter.
Disposal fees for whole flocked or plastic trees are $42.
