Monterey County is in the process of testing a new emergency alert and warning system in six areas.

The tests began Monday in Moss Landing Harbor and at California State University, Monterey Bay. They will continue Tuesday in San Ardo and Carmel Valley, Thursday in Pajaro, and Dec. 7 in the city of Monterey.

The tests will examine the ability to send alerts using text messages, phone calls directed through the state Reverse 911 database, and wireless emergency alerts through cellular towers to mobile devices.
