The Alliance of Californians for Community Empowerment (ACCE) Action has urged San Pablo renters affected by rising rents, and Contra Costa-ACCE members and representatives to make their voice heard at the San Pablo City Council meeting this Monday.
The renters have previously called upon the San Pablo City Council to pass a Rent Control Ordinance, during the “March for Rent Control” rally on Sept. 30, bringing out more than 50 supporters. The march coincided with downtown Los Angeles’ “Wages Are Too Damn Low, Rents Are Too Damn High” mass protest, which brought out hundreds.
The approval of Richmond and Antioch’s rent control measures inspired the residents of San Pablo to follow suit, according to a press release.
In 2020, the U.S. Government Accountability Office found that a $100 increase in median rent correlates to a 9 percent increase in homelessness. Per the 2022 annual survey of homelessness, Contra Costa saw a 35 percent increase since 2019.
Contra Costa-ACCE will lead the “The Rent Is Too Damn High! San Pablo City Council Rally for Rent Control” on Monday, Oct. 16 at 5 p.m. at the San Pablo City Hall, located at 1000 Gateway Avenue. San Pablo renters are urged to flood the city council meeting to prevent more families from being forced out of their homes due to rising prices, the group said.
