San Francisco Mayor London Breed kicked off the Juneteenth holiday season this past Friday with an announcement and flag-raising ceremony at City Hall. Juneteenth is the federal holiday that commemorates when enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas, were notified of their freedom in 1865.
Biden made June 19 a federal holiday in 2021, but as Breed mentioned in her speech, people celebrated Black culture and history on the date for years prior. Here’s a snapshot of some upcoming public celebrations across the Bay Area this year.
