Gov. Gavin Newsom nominated Bay Area native Martin Jenkins to the California Supreme Court on Monday, marking the first time in state history that an openly gay man would serve on the court.

Newsom tapped Jenkins, 66, to replace former Associate Justice Ming Chin, 77, who announced at the beginning of the year that he would retire from the court Aug. 31.
