Health officers in several Bay Area counties and cities have extended a shelter-in-place order through May 3 to try to limit the spread of the COVID-19 coronavirus in the region.

The previous order, issued in mid-March, was set to expire on April 7. The new order went into effect April 1 and covers eight counties — Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Solano and Sonoma — as well as the city of Berkeley. Napa County officials said Wednesday that its order, currently scheduled to end April 7, will be extended on Friday to be consistent with the rest of the Bay Area.
