The Oakland school board on Sept. 11 voted to close two schools and merge them with two others amid opposition voiced by parents and teachers during nearly five hours of pleading, tears and chanting in a packed meeting.

The board also voted to expand one K-8 dual immersion school and invest more money in an elementary school in its second round of school closures, mergers and consolidations.
