The latest developments around the region related to the novel coronavirus, also known as COVID-19, as of Tuesday evening include:

Santa Clara County began administering the Novavax COVID-19 vaccine Tuesday, giving eligible residents another vaccine option to protect themselves from COVID-19.

The two-dose vaccine, which federal regulators approved last month for adults, differs from the Moderna and Pfizer vaccines in that it has a traditional vaccine composition using non-infectious pieces of coronavirus particles.

Trials including some 30,000 adults in the U.S. and Mexico found the vaccine to be 90.4 percent effective at preventing mild, moderate and severe cases of the virus.

According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, those trials were conducted prior to the emergence of the delta and omicron variants, but the vaccine is still broadly effective at preventing serious illness and death.

As of Tuesday, at 4 p.m., officials have confirmed the following number of cases around the greater Bay Area region:

Alameda County: 333,426 cases, 1,966 deaths (330,441 cases, 1,967 deaths on Friday) (Totals include Berkeley Health Department data) (Death data revised by county)

Contra Costa County: 238,872 cases, 1,380 deaths (237,780 cases, 1,379 deaths on Friday)

Marin County: 42,825 cases, 284 deaths (42,604 cases, 284 deaths on Friday) (Totals include San Quentin State Prison)

Monterey County: 91,739 cases, 770 deaths (91,411 cases, 770 deaths on Friday)

Napa County: 30,935 cases, 146 deaths (30,809 cases, 146 deaths on Friday)

San Francisco County: 169,738 cases, 942 deaths (168,291 cases, 937 deaths on Friday)

San Joaquin County: 189,259 cases, 2,270 deaths (188,317 cases, 2,270 deaths on Friday)

San Mateo County: 162,062 cases, 789 deaths (161,234 cases, 789 deaths on Friday)

Santa Clara County: 411,055 cases, 2,381 deaths (408,906 cases, 2,381 deaths on Friday)

Santa Cruz County: 59,702 cases, 268 deaths (59,150 cases, 268 deaths on Friday)

Solano County: 103,726 cases, 429 deaths (103,726 cases, 429 deaths on Friday)

Sonoma County: 103,183 cases, 500 deaths (102,461 cases, 500 deaths on Friday)
